VANISHING KINGS BOEK

A Perfect start of ‘Vision 2020’

The Vanishing Kings Foundation is proud to announce the release of the book “Vanishing Kings – Lions of the Namib Desert”. With our new ‘Vision 2020’, we believe this is the perfect way to show our commitment to conservation education, and to help enhance a better understanding of our natural world. More than thirty years of lion research culminates in this captivating book about the desert-adapted lions of Namibia. The films “Vanishing Kings I & II”, have brought the desert-adapted lions of the Namib into the conservation spotlight. Having reached millions of viewers around the world, their story has evoked bucket-list wishes to see these magnificent animals in the wild, and it has encouraged much-needed debate to acknowledge the importance of conserving these vanishing lions. Now that we have the attention of the world, this book comes at a crucial time, when we need to learn more about how these incredible animals survive in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but more importantly how we can find ways for man and lion to live side-by-side in the unique conservation areas of Namibia.

About the book

The Namib is the only place on Earth where a small population of desert-adapted lions occurs. Remarkably, these unique lions have survived along the Namib’s Skeleton Coast for decades, but until twenty years ago they were mere phantoms – elusive and seldom seen – and then believed to have gone extinct.

In 1997 scientist Dr. Philip Stander discovered a small pride of survivors in the heart of the Desert and began to study the lions, which turned into a lifelong commitment. Throughout the years he was able to unfold the secrets surrounding these highly adaptive big cats that appeared to thrive in their harsh environment.

Having followed multiple generations of Desert lions from birth to adulthood, Philip takes the reader into their fascinating world, one that would otherwise have remained largely unknown. Through Philip’s intimate accounts on several Desert male lion’s life stories, we come to understand how these rare lions can survive in the relentless Namib Desert.

Illustrated with over 300 astonishing images of Desert lions and other desert-adapted animals that survive in the Namib, this book is an exceptional account of one of the most remarkable research projects ever undertaken.
